There is an every day challenge that many parents have faced in the love/hate relationship when their child begins wearing an orthotic. As parents we absolutely love that this device is giving our child the support they may need - but, the challenge in finding the right shoe for both comfort and style can bring out the worst hair pulling shopping experience for even the strongest of parents.

A question that we receive often is that my child just got their first orthotic, "what now?" Families have all shared both the struggles and the success in supporting a child in wearing a daily orthotic and finding the appropriate footwear. We want to make it easier for the next parent by sharing best suggestions in the world of AFO support.

INTRODUCTION TO BRACING & ORTHOTICS

It’s natural for parents to question the need for bracing and the benefits it will serve. As you learn more about orthotics and their potential role in the life of your child, you will come to know that orthotics can be a valuable resource for improving overall physical health and emotional well-being.

The Benefits of an Orthotic

Ankle Foot Orthotics (AFO’S) are commonly prescribed in children with neurological disorders such as stroke and Cerebral Palsy. Simply put, an AFO (sometimes called a brace or splint) provides support to help a child maintain a foot/ankle position, encourage mobility and overall improve stability and success.

Helping your child adjust emotionally

Even when an orthotic is properly fitted, in a fun design or your child's choice - your child may still experience frustration in wearing one. Most often the orthotic is to be worn continually, day and/or night, so it's not surprising that there is an adjustment period both physically and emotionally for both child and parent.

To help a child adjust:

 • Be positive and explain how much the orthotic helps. Encourage your child to think of it as a something that makes them stronger, faster and safer.
 • Talk with and prepare your child with answers for when others may ask about their orthotic.
 • Be understanding that they may be somewhat apprehensive. Children don’t want to stand out from their peers, so it can be difficult to wear an orthotic because it is noticeable to others.
 • Share pictures and stories of other children or adults, that also wear orthotics.

FINDING THE PERFECT "FIT"
The struggle is most often real in finding the perfect shoe for your child to wear over their orthotic. Shoes that fit orthotics are always challenging to figure out and find. Often times children may need 2 different sized shoes or a wider shoe. Some may only need to wear an orthotic on one foot, thus making a difference in shoe sizes and an increased challenge in purchasing shoes.

We encourage you to work closely with your child’s orthotist, physical or occupational therapist, to always ensure proper fit of orthotic and shoe.

With so many factors to consider we have shared the following recommended brands by parents:

 • Nordstrom (retail locations will sell separate sizes in same shoe)

Specialty Footwear:
 • Keeping Pace
 • EasyUp Shoes
 • Hatchbacks Footwear
 • Plae – with XL Tabs
 • Nike Flyease
 • BILLY Footwear

Shoes that provide a wider toe box when removing shoe insert:
 • New Balance
 • Converse
 • Stride Rite – Wide

Winter Footwear:
 • Butler Brand
 • Mya Mayu (Wanderer Boot)

PURCHASING AFO SOCKS
Socks play an important role in keeping the skin protected from an AFO. Purchasing breathable, seamless, cotton socks are best. Knee high socks work better for higher orthotics and can be purchased at most stores.

Your child's orthotist may often include AFO-specific socks that can be purchased at specialty stores like those listed below:
 • SmartKnit
 • AFOSocks
 • Rockathigh baby

RESOURCES FOR PARENTS
Questions will always come up, and finding that supportive community to ask those questions outside of your child's medical team - is important. Some of the very best "hacks" have come from other parents. The following are supportive social media pages specifically for families to connect and learn more.

KISS Pediatric Stroke Support (private facebook page specific to impacted families)
CHASA Shoe Exchange program

Thanks for explaining that orthotics can help children with neurological disorders by helping to maintain the foot/ankle position. My sister recently had a baby with Cerebral Palsy. I'll pass along your advice so she knows custom orthotics will be able to help her.

Undeniably children present an additional layer of challenge for the pediatrist. Even if a custom orthotic is fit perfectly at first, the children are quick to grow. This means that children can become accustomed to an uncomfortable orthotic that no longer serves its intended purpose a well as it could. This can mean frequent changes of apparatus, and then periods of discomfort as they adjust to the new fit. Nonetheless, the value is excellent, even if more management is required.

Thanks for the article.

It's cool that orthotics are often used with children who have neurological disorders to help encourage their mobility. My sister has been telling me about how her niece has cerebral palsy, and her parents are looking for a way to help her walk. I'll pass this information along to them so that they can look further into their options for getting orthotics in the future.

My son has gotten to the age where I want him to start wearing an orthotic. I am glad that your article mentions the importance of helping your child adjust to the new addition emotionally. I'll be sure to schedule an appointment with a podiatrist in the future.

That's good that orthotics would help increase stability. I feel like it would be good to not fall over while walking. Hopefully, those could help prevent injuries.

Thanks for explaining the importance of working closely with an orthotist to ensure your child's orthotics fit properly. My son has some issues with the arch of his feet and needs orthotics to correct it. I will be sure to find an orthotics specialist near me that my son and I are comfortable with so that we can communicate and get the best fit for my son's shoes.

Do you make winter boots that fit over AFO for adults? I am desperate. My old boots that were a battle to put on finally gave up the ghost. Now there is snow on the ground and I have no boots. I need something easy to put on over my AFO Brace. Water proof and warm.

You made a good point when you mentioned wearing orthotics can help your child to improve overall stability and success in walking. A friend of mine is worried since her son is having some difficulties with his feet and he is unable to walk properly ever since he was born. I will suggest to her getting foot orthotics to help him improve his stability and movement.

It's a good point that the orthotics are meant to be worn most of the time so your kids could go through an uncomfortable transition period. My sister is trying to get some orthotics for her daughter this year. She needs to find a medical professional that can do this process for her so that they find the right fit.

When parents searching a shoe for their kids then they should have in their mind that they got some good and comfortable shoe insoles. For that, I personally recommend a Children & Kids Insoles Store for purchasing good quality Insoles because I personally use their shoe insoles which have very good quality. My son's been complaining about his feet hurting, and he's not sure what to do about it. It makes sense that orthotics might help him out a bit. I'll make sure that we talk to a professional to ensure that we help him out properly.

That's cool that orthotics can help kids who have issues like strokes or cerebral palsy. I have a friend that has a kid who had a stroke. Maybe some custom orthotics could help them recover.

It's good to learn that you should talk to your pediatrician to find a pair of orthotics shoes for your child. My daughter is struggling with walking and I was wondering who I could talk to for help finding her orthotic shoes. I'll talk to a foot specialist to help her find special shoes.

I liked how you mentioned that ankle-foot orthotics can help a child maintain their foot/ankle position. My wife and I are wanting to help our daughter walk better and we were wondering how we could help her with a bit of medical advice. I'll talk to her about ankle-foot orthotics with her.

I've been having a bunch of issues with my feet aching, and I'm not sure how to fix it properly. It makes sense that I would want to consider trying orthotics! I can see how it would be important to get ones that fit properly.

I like that you mentioned telling your kids that braces are something that will make them stronger, faster, and safer. We just found out that my niece will need leg braces to walk. I will make sure to encourage the thoughts that they will make her faster and stronger I think that she will like that!

Thanks for pointing out that there are times that only one foot is recommended to wear orthotics. With that in mind, I need to look for a professional who has undergone an Orthotics and Prosthetics Career Program. It's to give me assurance that I will get the right recommendation from my feet which have been hurting every time I walk for a long time since I was a teen.

I appreciate you helping me understand that even when an orthotic is properly fitted, in a fun design or your child's choice - your child may still experience frustration in wearing one. I want to start running every day to lose some weight, but I am worried that my feet will hurt too much. It seems like it would be a good idea for me to get some orthotics from a podiatrist so that I don’t have to worry about foot pain while I am running.

It got me when you said that customized orthotics can be helpful even for children with neurological disorders like stroke and cerebral palsy. I never knew that even kids could have issues that will require them to use those kinds of devices or tools and it is great . they are available for them these days so that they can live a more comfortable life and help them cope with the conditions they are experiencing.
